Agriturismo Fattoria San Donata is situated in a small village about 10 minutes from San Gimignano.
An endless series of rolling hills covered in green pastures and vineyards surrounds the agriturismo. On the other side of the hill you can see the illuminated towers of San Gimignano at night.
When I asked the people here, they said: "The word 'Fattoria' means a farm that grows its own produce and even makes processed goods from it. The family-run Fattoria San Donato produces wine and olive oil. If you are there in the autumn, you can also be part of the saffron harvest in the fields, a unique experience.
Amongst these, San Donato is particularly famous for its production of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a famous local wine from the San Gimignano area, and it also has a wine tasting programme. It is very close to San Gimignano, so it is a little bit noisy with many visitors and vehicles coming for group tastings during the day.
It is a place where the spirit of "from the farm to the table" is literally put into practice. They say they have a policy of only serving food that is grown or produced directly at the Fattoria, or locally sourced and produced in the surrounding area.
It is an unforgettable experience to sit around a long wooden table in the evening, when all the visitors to the winery have left and only those staying at the agriturismo remain, and enjoy the homemade Tuscan dishes prepared by Federica and Umberto.
