Bernhardhof Andechs

Andechs

The nearest place to stay to Andechs Abbey

Situated at the foot of the Andechs mountain, about an hour's drive west of Munich, the Bernhardhof Andechs is a hotel close to the Andechs monastery. This is the place to look for accommodation closest to the monastery, as Andechs Monastery does not have its own accommodation. It takes less than five minutes to walk to the monastery.

To sum up, the reviews from those who've stayed here show that, in addition to being close to the monastery and being new accommodation, it is "a place that naturally combines the simple feel of an old farmhouse with modern design". It is also a family-run hotel with a friendly atmosphere.

In particular, the hotel restaurant, where Julian, a member of the host family, is the chef, is a must. The beer garden at the monastery is nice, too. But the restaurant serves grilled fish caught that day and homemade local dishes made with fresh ingredients. Try the homemade brioche buns or the chicken burger. Of course, you can also enjoy Andechs beer here.

Wish List

Here is a wish list of places I would like to stay on my next trip, including a monastic brewery and brewery accommodation in Bavaria that I missed on my last few trips to Germany.

Andechs Monastery & beer

Andechs Beer

It was in 1455 that the Benedictine monastery was built on the present site. For a long time it was known as the "Holy Mountain" because of the holy relics that the Count of Andechs had kept there. It is said that the monks had been brewing beer since that time and that the weakest beer was given to pilgrims, the regular beer was consumed in the monastery and the strongest beer was given to the abbot and guests of high rank. In those days 'strong beer = good beer'.

In the 20th century, Andechs Brewery expanded and introduced modern equipment, and is said to have the largest production of any monastery beer. It produces a variety of beers, but the most famous is the Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel.

FYI, there are two places to drink beer at Andechs Monastery. The Braustüberl in front of the brewery is a self-service beer hall where you can bring your own snacks and beer, and further down is the Klostergasthof. You'll need to spend a day here to sample all the Andechs beers.
