Agriturismo Villa Mazzi

Pienza, Montepulciano

Enjoy the abundant, local food of Tuscany

Agriturismo Villa Mazzi is a farm situated on a hill overlooking Montepulciano in the direction of Pienza.

You can look out over a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves and pastures from the courtyard of the terracotta and stone farmhouse. As the red glow of the late evening sky spreads, you can sit in a garden chair outside the agriturismo and gaze out over the open Tuscan countryside below.

As an agriturismo is an accommodation facility attached to a farm, you can taste the special products of each farm. The farm of Villa Mazzi is run by Mrs. Lorena and her daughter, who make different types of jams and marmalades with figs, pears, apricots, plums, cherries, apples and other seasonal fruits, as well as honey from the farm's beehives.

In addition to the Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG wines, the estate also produces olive oil from the olive groves that surround the estate. I had the opportunity to taste some freshly pressed oil at another location. It was so fresh and had a slightly pungent grass flavour that I wondered if it was really olive oil. The olives are harvested in late autumn, after October, so if you go there you should try Lorena's olive oil. If you come in the autumn, you can also experience the grape or olive harvest.

But don't be too disappointed if you can't join in the experience. The farm has a small shop selling not only its own produce but also local food from other farms in the area, where you can find delicious treasures carefully made by every house in the neighbourhood. If you search carefully, you can find some unexpected and unusual ingredients in this small store, and you can also try your hand at cooking a meal in the farm's guest house with kitchen.
