Rifugio Lagazuoi
Passo Flazarego on the Altavia 1 Trekking Trail

Mountain lodge with the best view of Dolomites
The Rifugio Lagazuoi is a mountain hut located on a pass road between the eastern and western parts of the Dolomites, at an altitude of 2,752 metres above sea level, on the Passo di Falzarego. This was the site of a fierce battle between Austria and Italy during the First World War, and in ancient times it was a mountain peak where the legend of the lost kingdom of Fanes in the Dolomites was left behind. In 1965, the Ugos chose a life in the mountains, building a refuge that is now run by their sons.
All along the Dolomites Trekking Trail there are refuges for trekkers, but among them the Ragazuoi Refuge, located on the Altavia 1 Trekking Trail, is famous for its excellent view of the Dolomite mountain ranges, such as Marmolada, Sella and Monte Civetta. Those who have stayed here have chosen the impressive landscapes between the peaks, the breathtaking moments of sunrise and sunset when the clouds turn red, the silence of the night and the magnificent scenery full of stars that seem to pour down.
The summer trekking season runs from early June to early October and the winter season from late December to late March. The lodge has double rooms, triple rooms and dormitories with bunk beds, and toilets and showers are shared. The cylindrical sauna next to the lodge was also one of the specialities, but I heard that it was broken in a snowstorm last winter, and I hope it has been repaired.
Looking at the reviews of the lodge, the views are the best and the beds are clean, but the reviews are mixed about the dinner served as half board. You can have a course of ravioli or pasta, salmon or beef dishes, desserts such as chocolate cake and drinks such as wine and beer.
As it is very popular, it is not easy to book and you need to make reservations several months in advance. Especially double rooms fill up quickly, so you must hurry. If you miss out on a room, you can make up for it with a beer on the terrace of the chalet, which can be reached by cable car. Oh, and the cable car up to the lodge runs until 4.40pm (it comes down at 5pm), so don't forget. You can walk up, but it takes an unexpectedly long time. It takes an hour and a half to walk up the rough stone path.
